President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and died on April 15th, 1865 (just 14 years after Whitestown became a town)
On April 21, 1865, the train that carried the body of President Abraham Lincoln left Washington, D.C. on its way to Springfield, Illinois, where he was to be buried. The train passed thru several towns on it's journey.
During the night of May 1, 1865 the train passed through Whitestown and it's said that about 100 people gathered around a single bonfire at 1:00 A.M. to witness the trains passage thru town
