This is a collection of narratives that were among the information shared with me by Janice West.
I therefore presume that these are the written notes compiled by Janice during her years of research.
Richard Smith provided addditional info on 8 South Main
Part of the building was purchased by my father 1969, remodeled in 1972 into offices and sample room for R.N.Smith brokerage co. (a candy sales company selling large volumes of candy to wholesalers and distributers and ocassionally larger retailers across il., in. and oh. for a percentage of sales.). samples were provided to buyers on a "first run fresh" basis. thus, these samples were provided to salesman, then to buyers. NOTHING WAS OLD. SAMPLES ROTATED CONSTANTLY. then, 1975ish, R.N.Smith bought the print shop north/middle section and second floor ("mcmakens", typeset machine as big as 8x8x8 was sent to the smithsonian in washington d.c.). this purchase was the entire building, but, the Merchants bank portion/e-booms bikes. mid 70s renovation included 1st floor larger sample room and new reception room and restroom renovation and small breakroom and more office space. 2nd floor was 2 new full commercial mens and womens rrs, upper stair foyer which has reinstalled SOLID brass double full glass doors weighting 1200lbs that came from the ball mfrg building in Muncie Indiana. a full commercial kitchen, and dining/banquet room south with a reinstalled "wet" bar and "back bar" and all hvac was also renovated and upgraded. then, fire in 1982 smoke damaged most of the building that required another full renovation. with the invention of fax machine and big box stores the candy business was closed and building sold to Larry Averit. 1993ish. so, this bldg was offices for a national leading sales company that garnered national awards, prizes and recognition, though it sold candy in only 3 states, 1969 to 1993. last: the wet and back bar were reinstalled taken from a shopping mall at keystone at the crossing and a bar called "great gadspy's". while the wet and back bar have been removed the brass doors remain. they are quite impressive when the brass has been polished. |
